Singleton Station, Centurion Way

Project type

Heritage Interpretation

Date

August 2025

Location

West Dean, West Sussex

I led this project as part of my role as Interpretation Officer with the South Downs National Park Authority. Centurion Way in West Sussex follow the old Chichester to Midhurst railway line which has been turned into an accessible, multi-user path. The SDNPA extended the route in 2025 so that it now passes through the site of the old Singleton station, where the platforms have been restored and users can take a moment to stop and absorb the fascinating history of the site.

I developed a full interpretation strategy for this project and then delivered on the phase one 'essential works' which included five interpretation panels (designed by The Way Design and manufactured by Door6), two solar audio posts playing an immersive soundscape, two temporary interpretation panels, and a suite of signage to support positive user experience along the trail.

I researched and wrote all content, sourced all images, edited the soundscape and commissioned the mapping and design work. I was keen to celebrate the heritage of the site by linking to the original structural drawings and existing buildings on site to the overall look & feel, so requested that architectural details were included in the design somehow, including with the etched lectern posts.
